Python Job Details

EUMETSAT is Europe’s meteorological satellite agency - monitoring the weather and climate from space - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

EUMETSAT is an international organisation employing staff from across all 30 member states and this role is being advertised on multiple international job boards, but please note that this role would be based in Darmstadt, Germany and would require international applicants to relocate if successful.

We are currently looking for an experienced Remote Sensing Scientist to join our international team of young and inspiring engineers and industry professionals, tasked with driving innovation within the Space, Satellite and Earth Observation sector.

This role is routed in the mission of EUMETSAT and will provide the opportunity to work with leading IT, Space and Earth Observation organisations and domain experts to make a positive impact on society!

The Remote Sensing and Products (RSP) Division is tasked with providing the scientific expertise required to develop, implement, validate, maintain and evolve the operational observational products for all EUMETSAT satellites and agreed third party missions, such as the Copernicus CO2 Monitoring, as well as establishing the user requirements for future EUMETSAT missions.

Within the Image Navigation, Registration, and Calibration (INRC) Competence Area of the Remote Sensing and Products Division (RSP), the Remote Sensing Scientist (Copernicus) will be responsible for, and contribute to, the scientific development, maintenance, validation and quality monitoring of Multi-Angle Polarimeter (MAP) and of Cloud-Imager (CLIM) instrument level-1 products of the Copernicus CO2 mission (CO2M), in particular with respect to instrument calibration, navigation, and co-registration. CO2M is the space component of the European integrated observation and inversion modelling system dedicated to the monitoring of anthropogenic CO2 emissions.

What you’ll be doing

· Acquire and maintain an in depth understanding of the instrument design, performances and calibration of the Multi-Angle Polarimeter (MAP) and Cloud Imager (CLIM) instruments on-board the Sentinel-7 CO2 Monitoring mission;

· Support the prototyping and operational implementation of algorithms for image navigation, co-registration, and calibration for the MAP and CLIM instrument level-1 products;

· Plan, develop and perform product calibration and validation activities, with respect to MAP and CLIM calibration and co-registration performance, including the MAP and CLIM product co-registration to the main CO2 spectrometer instrument on-board CO2M;

· Provide product quality analysis and long-term monitoring of MAP and CLIM level-1 products. Support and develop tools for this task;

· Support Sentinel-7 mission preparation for commissioning and operations with respect to processor integrations, system testing, validation and verification;

· Support industrial activities for operational processor development, and processor specification, as well as MAP and CLIM instrument ground-calibration campaigns;

· Play an active role in relevant preparations for missions operation and scientific interactions with the CO2 Monitoring and Verification Support capacity user community.

What we offer

· Excellent salary, of up to Euro 7,500 / month NET (after tax) based on skills and experience;

· Relocation allowance and support (if applicable).

Requirements

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (or equivalent experience) in remote sensing, physics or other related degree.

Skills and Experience:

· In-depth scientific knowledge and hands-on experience of image calibration, navigation and co-registration algorithms in remote sensing applications;

· Proven experience of processing of large-volumes of data from relevant space borne instruments;

· Demonstrable experience with scientific development projects and working with user communities and researchers;

· Experience of working in a UNIX environment and with scientifically-oriented coding languages, C/C++ and Python;

· Strengths in analysis, synthesis and presentation, coupled with good interpersonal skills and a proven ability to apply these to the interactions within a team and between teams;

· Familiarity with multi-angle polarimeter and/or high spatial resolution imager calibration operating in the visible and short-wave infrared region is an advantage;

· Familiarity with IDL and/or MATLAB, Java, and software libraries and tools specific for orbit and pointing computations (e.g. Orekit, ESA EOCFI), earth observation satellite data and image processing (e.g. pytroll, gdal, opencv, itk), data storage (e.g. netCdf, grib) is an advantage.

APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED IN ENGLISH. WE WILL BE UNABLE TO CONSIDER APPLICATIONS SUBMITTED IN OTHER LANGUAGES.
